The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)’s implementation of message traceability rules will come into effect from Tuesday, after an extended deadline which earlier was set to November 1 and later to December 1.
In an update issued by the regulatory authority, it clarified that these guidelines would not mean a delay in receiving OTP (one-time password) for the consumers.
TRAI, in a tweet clarified the ‘misinformation’ floating around about the delay in receiving the OTP from the service providers is not true.
In October, TRAI, in a release, announced the mandate for traceability for all the short-message service (SMS) from the service providers.
“To enhance message traceability, TRAI has mandated that the trail of all messages from Senders to recipients must be traceable from November 1, 2024,” said the statement from the Ministry of Communications on August 20.
Later, the deadline was extended to provide the transition period to service providers, to implement the measures to have the complete traceability.
TRAI had earlier noted that all access providers have implemented the technical solutions and more than 13,000 principal entities (PEs) have already registered their chains with the respective access providers.
“All PEs and telemarketers (TMs) are advised to complete the declaration of chains on priority as any message that fails to adhere to the defined telemarketer chain will be rejected,” said TRAI.
