Tragedy Strikes Mamata Banerjee's Family as Niece Found Dead in Birbhum Residence

Bristy Mukherjee Ghatak, the 28-year-old niece of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was reportedly found dead at her house in Birbhum district on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Officers recovered the body from a room on the second floor of her home in Rampurhat’s Kusumba village. Police have sent the body to Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death.

"The circumstances leading to the death will be established after the post-mortem and other procedural inquiries," a senior police officer reportedly said.

Depression and Marital Discord

According to family members, Mukherjee had been suffering from depression for the past few years and was undergoing treatment. Local reports indicate that divorce proceedings between her and her husband were also underway.

Mukherjee had previously faced allegations of securing a teaching job illegally in connection with the state's school recruitment case. Her family confirmed she subsequently lost the job following a Supreme Court order cancelling appointments in government-aided schools over recruitment irregularities.

Police have launched an investigation into the death, with procedural inquiries underway.

The incident comes just days after former West Bengal Assembly Deputy Speaker and senior Trinamool Congress leader Asish Banerjee was reportedly found hanging inside a party office in Rampurhat on Sunday. The five-time former MLA left a purported suicide note denying corruption allegations and claiming attempts were made to malign him.
