Threats to ‘blow up’ Delhi Assembly received days after security breach

Two bomb threats were received by the Delhi Legislative Assembly on Monday, days after a security breach at the complex raised concerns over safety arrangements, as per reports.
The threats, sent via email to the official ID of the Assembly Secretariat and to Speaker Vijender Gupta, reportedly warned that the Vidhan Sabha would be “blown up” using “15 cyanide gas-filled RDX bombs”.
Reports citing officials stated that both emails, written in Hindi and carrying identical content, claimed that explosions would be carried out within three hours. The messages also included a controversial line stating that only Muslim employees should be evacuated from the premises.
The emails further made references to political developments in Tamil Nadu ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections and reportedly mentioned actor-politician S V Shekhar in connection with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, alleging he had been sent as a “BJP Brahmin agent”.
Security agencies have launched an investigation into the origin of the emails, and a thorough search of the Assembly premises was carried out. No suspicious objects were found, officials said.
The incident comes less than a week after a man breached security at the Assembly complex by driving through an iron gate. The accused, identified as Sarabjit Singh from Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh, entered through a VIP gate, exited his vehicle, placed a bouquet on the Speaker’s car and drove away before being detained.
Family members of Singh later said he had been attempting to meet a minister to seek assistance in tracing his missing nephew. They also claimed he had been under distress and off medication at the time of the incident.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu is scheduled to go to the polls in a single phase on April 23, with counting set for May 4. Key contenders in the election include the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
Further investigations are under way.
