Tech outage disrupts check-in systems, flight operations affected at multiple airports in India

Flight operations across several Indian airports were hit on Wednesday morning after a major technical glitch crippled check-in systems, leading to widespread delays and passenger chaos, according to initial reports.
A system notice at Varanasi airport informed travellers that a global Microsoft Windows outage had impacted IT networks and check-in services used by airlines. As a result, at least four carriers IndiGo, SpiceJet, Akasa Air, and Air India Express struggled to process passengers digitally. There was no immediate response from Microsoft or the affected airlines on the cause of the failure.
With automated systems down, many airlines reportedly shifted to manual check-in and boarding, causing long queues and congestion.
The disruption reportedly triggered particularly chaotic scenes at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, where a video circulating online showed frustrated passengers crowding around an airline help desk, waving tickets and phones while demanding clarity on delayed flights.
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) also issued an advisory on X, cautioning that several domestic carriers were facing operational difficulties, which could result in flight delays and schedule changes. It said “Some domestic airlines are currently experiencing operational challenges, which may lead to delays or schedule changes.
“Our on-ground teams are diligently working with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience. Passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines for the latest flight updates.”
Air India later announced that the external system responsible for the outage had been restored. In an update on X, the airline said all airports had resumed normal check-in procedures and that its flights were operating as scheduled.
“We appreciate passengers’ patience and understanding,” the airline said in its statement.
