Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Announces 5-Year Age Relaxation for Government Jobs, Offers Relief to Aspirants

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has increased the upper age limit for direct recruitment to government jobs by five years, giving thousands of candidates additional opportunities to apply for state government posts.

The decision, announced on October 30, 2026, follows demands from competitive examination aspirants who faced the prospect of losing eligibility because of existing age restrictions.

The revised age limit will remain in force for five years from October 30. The additional relaxation will also apply to reserved categories over and above their existing age concessions.

Revised Age Limits for Group 1 and Group 2 Examinations

The revised limits will vary according to the recruitment category and the candidate's reservation status.

For Group 1 examinations, the upper age limit for general category candidates has been increased from 32 to 37 years. For reserved category candidates, it has been raised from 37 to 42 years.

For candidates with disabilities, the upper age limit for the general category has increased from 42 to 47 years, while the limit for reserved category candidates has gone up from 47 to 52 years.

For Group 2 and Group 2A examinations, the upper age limit for general category candidates has been raised from 30 to 35 years. Reserved category candidates will continue to have no upper age limit under the applicable rules.

The age limit for general category candidates with disabilities in these examinations has also increased from 40 to 45 years. தினமணி+1

Reserved Categories to Get Additional Benefit

The five-year relaxation will be over and above existing concessions for candidates belonging to Backward Classes (BC), Backward Class Muslims (BCM), Most Backward Classes and Denotified Communities (MBC&DNC), Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).

Destitute widows will also receive the additional benefit, according to the government announcement.

The revised limits will apply to direct recruitment to Tamil Nadu government services, with category-wise provisions governing individual examinations.

Thousands of Aspirants Expected to Benefit

The state government said the decision would benefit thousands of candidates whose eligibility for government recruitment was nearing expiry because of existing age limits.

The relaxation is expected to give competitive examination aspirants more time and opportunities to prepare for and apply for government jobs.

The revised age limits will take effect from October 30, 2026, and remain applicable for five years.
