Supreme Court to function on second, fourth Saturdays starting July 14
The Ministry of Law and Justice has announced that the Supreme Court will begin functioning even on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month starting from July 14, 2025, according to official reports.
As per the Supreme Court (Amendment) Rules, 2025, second and fourth Saturdays which were previously observed as non-working days will now be treated as regular working days for the court’s offices.
Revised working hours and guidelines:
The Supreme Court will remain open from 10 am to 5 pm on all working days, except on designated holidays and partial working days.
After 4.30 pm, only urgent filings will be accepted.
On Saturdays, urgent matters must be filed before 12 noon.
Special holidays and decisions regarding work on such days will be determined by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) on a case-by-case basis.
This move comes in light of the growing backlog of pending cases and aims to promote timely justice and enhance the efficiency of the judiciary.
