Delhi’s incarcerated chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has been granted interim bail by the Supreme Court till June 1.
Kejriwal approached the apex court after his bail plea was rejected by Delhi High Court.
On May 8, a bench headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna had said that it will deliver its decision on the bail plea today.
Notably, enforcement directorate arrested Kejriwal over the Delhi liquor excise policy case on Mar 21.
The ED on May 9 opposed the grant of interim relief saying that a politician can claim no “special status” higher than that of an ordinary citizen and is as much liable to be arrested and detained for committing offences as any other citizen.
Kejriwal has been granted the right to campaign by the SC, despite the ED opposing the move by stating that “the right to campaign for elections is neither a fundamental right nor a constitutional right and not even a legal right.”
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had earlier said that the legal team of Arvind Kejriwal on May 9 raised strong objection to the affidavit filed by the ED, claiming that it was submitted without obtaining the SC's approval.
