Sitaram Yechury, CPI(M) general secretary, passes away at 72

After battling a respiratory tract infection for a few days on respiratory support, Communist Party of India (Marxist) secretary and former Rajya Sabha MP Sitaram Yechury (72) passed away this afternoon.
He was admitted to the intensive care unit at AIIMS, Delhi, where he was being treated for an acute respiratory tract infection. In recent days, he has been on respiratory support and under the care of a multidisciplinary team of doctors.
Yechury became the general secretary of the CPI(M) in 2015, succeeding Prakash Karat.
He was re-elected as the General Secretary of the CPI(M) during the 22nd Party Congress, which took place in Hyderabad from April 18 to April 22, 2018. He was subsequently elected for a third term as General Secretary at the 23rd Party Congress, held in Kannur, Kerala, from April 6 to April 10, 2022.
He was vocal on the issue of the recent UGC-NEET paper leak case and demanded a court-monitored probe by a special investigation team (SIT).
