SIT arrests chief priest Rajeevaru in Sabarimala gold theft case

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Sabarimala gold theft arrested the chief priest of the Ayyappa temple, Kandararu Rajeevaru, on Friday after detaining and questioning him earlier in the day.
As per reports, Rajeevaru was arrested for his alleged close links with the prime accused, Unnikrishnan Potti, and for allegedly giving “silent permission” to the replating of gold-clad plates of the dwarapalaka (guardian) idol and the kattilapadi (door frame) outside the temple premises.

The SIT has alleged that the replating work was carried out beyond the temple grounds in 2019, in violation of established ritual norms. Investigators claim that Rajeevaru was aware of the violation, but failed to report it due to his proximity to Potti, who had been entrusted with the gold plates for replating.
Rajeevaru, however, has denied the allegations, maintaining that permission was granted only for repair work and that all prescribed procedures were followed. He has been remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.
Investigators said Potti had visited the Sabarimala temple as an associate of the tantri, and that sponsorship permissions granted to him were questionable. The SIT suspects that Rajeevaru maintained a close relationship with Potti and personally handled all dealings involving him. Rajeevaru’s alleged involvement in the transactions was reportedly corroborated by statements given by Potti.
The SIT is investigating two cases linked to the loss of gold from the temple. Rajeevaru’s arrest has been recorded in connection with the second case. He is the 12th person to be arrested in the investigation so far.
His bail application is scheduled to be heard on Tuesday.
