Another woman has reportedly died in the suspected post-caesarean infection case at New Medical College Hospital in Kota, intensifying concerns over the treatment of women who underwent deliveries at the government-run facility earlier this week.
Hospital authorities say the latest victim, 19-year-old Jyoti Nayak, died on Thursday morning while undergoing treatment in the nephrology ward. Her death came less than 48 hours after another woman, Payal, 26, died following complications after surgery.
Additional Superintendent Dr RP Meena reportedly said that Jyoti’s condition had been the most critical among the remaining patients. She added that her condition worsened on Thursday morning and was placed on ventilator support. But later at 10:30 am, she died.
Doctors said Jyoti had delivered her first child through a caesarean procedure. Her newborn baby remains healthy and is under observation in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
Tension erupted at the hospital after Jyoti’s family refused to accept her body and staged a protest on the medical college premises. Even Congress party workers joined the demonstration alongside her husband Ravi and other relatives.
The family alleged that the women had been administered incorrect medication after surgery, leading to severe complications and deaths.
According to hospital officials, around 12 to 13 women underwent caesarean deliveries at the hospital on Monday evening and late at night. Within hours of surgery, the condition of six women reportedly deteriorated sharply, with symptoms including falling blood pressure, reduced platelet count and urinary blockage.
All six women were shifted to the nephrology ward for specialised treatment. Payal died on Tuesday morning, while four others continue to remain in critical condition.
Authorities said preparations were under way to transfer the remaining patients to a higher medical facility in Jaipur for advanced treatment.
A specialist medical team from SMS Medical College arrived in Kota on Wednesday night to assist local doctors. The team includes experts from anaesthesia, medicine, gynaecology and nephrology departments.
Hospital officials maintained that the newborn babies of the affected women are healthy and remain under observation or treatment in the NICU. Payal’s baby was discharged on Wednesday evening.
Meanwhile, the Kota district administration has constituted an inquiry committee to investigate the incident and determine the cause of the complications.
