RG Kar case: Serious lapses in initial probe come to CBI’s notice
Updated: Sep 8th, 2024
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the initial probe into the rape and murder of a woman doctor at R G Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata. The CBI took over the case after a Calcutta High Court order, following concerns about potential lapses in the earlier investigation.
Sources within the CBI have identified two key lapses in the initial investigation:
The videography of the post-mortem process and the description of the wounds in the post-mortem report were deemed insufficient. Forensic experts assisting the CBI noted that the language used in the report was amateurish and concealed relevant details.
The CBI believes that a second post-mortem could have provided valuable additional information for the investigation. They are now trying to understand why the victim’s body was cremated so quickly.
The CBI is also questioning the victim’s family and associates to identify any administrative or political figures who were present at their residence or at the crematorium before the cremation. This information could be crucial in understanding the circumstances surrounding the case.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case on Sept 9, where the CBI is expected to present its progress report on the investigation.
