Rajasthan High Court extends interim bail of Asaram till July 7
The Rajasthan High Court has reportedly extended the interim bail of self-styled godman Asaram, convicted in a rape case, till July 7, 2026. The bail was granted on medical grounds. The court has also imposed strict conditions, stating that Asaram will not be allowed to participate in any religious gatherings, will not be permitted to assemble crowds, and is strictly barred from leaving the country.
High Court decision
During the hearing, the defence submitted that Asaram is of advanced age and is suffering from multiple serious medical conditions, as per reports.
The State Government strongly opposed the request. Additional Advocate General Deepak Choudhary informed the court that the jail administration is already providing adequate medical treatment and facilities to Asaram inside the prison. He reportedly argued that there was no requirement to extend interim bail as proper healthcare support is available within the jail system. After considering the submissions from both sides, the High Court decided to extend the interim bail.
However, the court made it clear that this relief comes with strict conditions. It ordered that Asaram must not engage in any religious gatherings, must not assemble followers or crowds, and is strictly prohibited from leaving the country during the bail period.
Asaram has been lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail since 2013. His arrest followed serious criminal charges, including allegations of rape of a minor. In 2018, a special court in Rajasthan convicted him in the case and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The judgment was based on the findings of guilt in the trial court, after which he was sent to jail to serve his sentence.
Following the conviction, Asaram filed an appeal before the Rajasthan High Court challenging the special court’s judgment. This appeal is still pending for final hearing and decision. During this period, he has been granted interim bail from time to time, mainly on medical grounds, subject to strict judicial conditions.
