Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have been named in an FIR following a complaint by Akashvani employees over their alleged entry into the broadcaster’s premises during an opposition protest in Delhi.
The complaint also names MPs and others who accompanied the Congress leaders during Tuesday’s demonstration. The protest was held after INDIA bloc MPs were stopped from marching towards the Election Commission office over allegations of “vote chori”.
Protest Continued For Over Eight Hours
Rahul Gandhi reached the All India Radio premises on Parliament Street around noon and joined the protesting opposition leaders. Earlier, while marching from Parliament towards the Election Commission headquarters, he had climbed onto barricades as MPs raised slogans demanding action over alleged irregularities in the electoral process.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, NCP-SP MP Supriya Sule and several other opposition leaders were also part of the march.
Police stopped the protesters near the NITI Aayog office, with heavy barricading deployed around Parliament and the Election Commission premises. The leaders subsequently continued their protest at Akashvani Bhawan.
Rahul Gandhi, Other MPs Detained
After the sit-in continued for more than eight hours, police removed the protesters from the AIR premises. Rahul Gandhi and several other Congress leaders and MPs were detained, including K C Venugopal, Charanjit Singh Channi, Pawan Khera, K Suresh, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Deepender Hooda, Praniti Shinde, Varsha Gaikwad and Imran Pratapgarhi.
The detainees were taken to New Police Lines at Kingsway Camp. Delhi Police said around 250 people, including nearly 50 MPs, were detained during the protest.
Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders were released at around 10 pm, the party said.
Opposition Demands Action Against CEC
The protest was linked to the opposition’s allegations of “vote chori” and its demand for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The demonstration also came amid reports of differences within the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and related matters.
The FIR has been registered after Akashvani staffers complained about the alleged forced entry into the broadcaster’s office during the protest.
