Rahul Gandhi demands Gautam Adani’s arrest after US court’s fraud and bribery charges

The Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi has demanded that the chairperson of Adani Group, Gautam Adani, be arrested after Adani and other top leaders of the conglomerate were charged with multiple counts of fraud and lying to investors about the scheme.
Gandhi further demanded the sacking of Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) chief Madhabi Puri Buch following the emergence of this case, claiming that she protected Adani’s stock price.
However, he alleged that the business tycoon will not be arrested in India, as he has the backing of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“He holds major funding for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and PM Narendra Modi is backing him.” He added that PM cannot act on such issues because he’s under Adani’s obligation.
“Adani has hijacked the country,” he added.
Gandhi also claimed that he would reveal a 'network' of such people, stating that he had been doing that for a while now. “We have successfully managed to destroy the credibility of the PM with that,” Gandhi added in his address to the media.
He also took a jibe at BJP's 'ek hai to safe hai' slogan, using it to point out collusion between the ruling party and Adani chief.
Notably, the Eastern District of New York court on Wednesday established that Senior executives of an Indian renewable energy company, an American company, and a Canadian investor were involved in a bribery scheme.
They bribed Indian government officials to secure solar energy supply contracts and misrepresented their anti-bribery practices to investors. As per the court document, they also obstructed a US government investigation into the scheme.
The defendants are accused of paying more than $250 million in bribes to Indian government officials to obtain solar energy contracts worth billions of dollars for Adani Green Energy, a renewable energy company majority-owned by Adani Group.
Adani discussed the bribery plan with officials in person, prosecutors reportedly said.
