Norwegian journalist and commentator Helle Lyng has found herself at the centre of an international political debate after questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Norway. The incident took place in Oslo following a joint media appearance with the Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, as per reports.

As PM Modi exited the venue without taking media questions, Lyng loudly asked, “Why don’t you take some questions from the world’s freest press?” The moment was captured on video and quickly went viral across social media platforms, triggering discussions on press freedom and political transparency.

As per reports, Helle Lyng, who has previously worked as a freelancer for several Norwegian publications and MSN, is now a commentator in a Oslo-based newspaper Dagsavisen, later shared the clip online and referred to Norway’s top ranking on the World Press Freedom Index, while highlighting India’s lower position. Her remarks sparked sharp reactions from both supporters and critics of the Indian government.

The controversy reportedly intensified during a later media briefing by India’s Ministry of External Affairs, where MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George strongly defended India’s democratic and media institutions after repeated questions from Norwegian journalists regarding press freedom, democracy and human rights.

She reportedly asked why the international community should trust India and whether PM Modi would begin taking critical questions from the press.

This controversy got political reactions from both the leaders from the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress. Rahul Gandhi reportedly shared the video online and criticised PM Modi, claiming the Prime Minister appeared uncomfortable facing questions from journalists.

The BJP reportedly dismissed the claims with the BJP IT Cell head, Amit Malviya, defending PM Modi, reportedly arguing that Norway’s Prime Minister has also not taken questions during the joint media appearance and accusing the opposition leaders of politicising the issue.
