A 30-year-old PhD scholar from Pimpri-Chinchwad in Pune died by suicide at her home in Shahunagar after she was allegedly harassed by her research guide Dr A Binniyamin, an assistant director at the Botanical Survey of India. Police have arrested Binniyamin and sent him to 15-day judicial custody after a court order.

After the research student died on April 11, Binniyamin was arrested by the police after the woman’s father filed a complaint against the accused at the MIDC Bhosari Police Station in Pune.

The police found a suicide note from the woman’s house. In the note, she alleged Binniyamin had subjected her to misconduct, immoral behaviour, and mental harassment since August 2025. She further stated that  his continued harassment caused severe mental distress which led her to  take the extreme step.

In the investigation, police revealed that they found a stamp paper in which the accused had given a written statement. He had reportedly admitted to his actions and assured her he would not repeat them. Despite this, the student remained under severe emotional stress, which she mentioned in her note.
