Owaisi opposes Waqf Bill, cites violation of constitutional rights

Asaduddin Owaisi, chief of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), strongly opposed the current Waqf Bill during the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meeting in the Lok Sabha.
He emphasised that the Muslim community does not accept the bill in its present form, arguing that it violates Articles 25, 26, and 14 of the Constitution, which guarantee the right to religious freedom and equality.
Owaisi criticised the bill, asserting that it would hinder India’s progress and push the nation back to the socio-political environment of the 1980s and early 1990s. He cautioned that if the proposed amendments are passed, Waqf properties could face significant threats, with no land or structures remaining intact.
As a representative of the Muslim community, Owaisi stressed that he would resolutely protect religious sites such as mosques and dargahs. He underscored his duty to speak honestly in the parliamentary setting and highlighted his pride as an Indian citizen.
Owaisi further raised concerns that the bill, if implemented, could trigger social instability in the country, an outcome he firmly opposes.
