Over 3.5 cr households in India, including 4,000 villages have no tap water facility

It’s over seven decades since Independence, yet more than 3.61 crore of the total 19.31 crore rural households in India lack basic tap water connectivity. These include 4.65 lakh households in 4,218 villages across the country that are without piped water supply as of September 26, 2025. This data is available from the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation under Ministry of Jal Shakti.

The ministry data says that 12.47 crore rural household have been provided water tap connectivity since inception of Jal Jeevan Mission on August 15, 2019. However, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Assam are the states which have more than 500 villages without piped water supply as on September 26, 2025.

Situation in Rajasthan

The highest – 1,163 out of total 4,218 villages which lacked piped water supply are from Rajasthan. Total 1.51 lakh rural household living in this 1,163 villages of Rajasthan still don’t have functional water tap connectivity.

A total of 1,673 households of Karkeri Panchayat of Ajmer district and 614 households of Burja village of Alwar district are worst in the region. Apart from this Berka village having 310 households and Ramsinghpura village of Alwar district doesn’t have functional household tap connectivity.

Bihar and Uttar Pradesh also affected

Almost 775 villages in Bihar still lack piped water supply. Over 1.09 lakh rural household in this villages of the state doesn’t have piped water tap connection. Ghana village of Aurangabad district has 821 and Raghopur with 353  household in Araria district lacks this basic facility.

A total of 319 household of Faridpur village in Aligarh and 273 household of Nagla kisuna of Uttar Pradesh doesn’t have water supply tap connections. Lalpur village of Amethi and Ibraheempur village of Amroha are also largely affected.

Situation in Assam and Madhya Pradesh

As many as 525 out of total 24,486 villages of Assam and  318 villages of Madhya Pradesh still lack functional household tap water connectivity. 500 households in Pachnumberchar village and 333 households of Matraghola village of  Bongaigaon district in Assam lack piped water supply in the state.

Moreover, 451 villages of Barkheda baramad gunga in Bhopal district and Maramjhiri with 356 households still of Betul district in Madhya Pradesh lacks functional tap connectivity.

States with 100% connectivity

Apart from providing 12.41 crore households tap water supply across the country under Jal Jeevan Mission as on August 15, 2019, 7 states including Gujarat, Haryana, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Telangana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh have achieved 100% functional household tap connectivity.

UTs like Goa, Andaman and Nicobar Island, Puducherry, Dadra Nagar Haveli and Diu-Daman have achieved this milestone.
