The opposition bloc in the Upper House is set to bring forward a no-confidence motion against the Chairman and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.
The row took a confrontational turn when several opposition MPs voiced “growing dissatisfaction” with VP Dhankhar’s approach to the house proceedings.
Several parties, including the Congress, All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Samajwadi Party (SP), and other INDIA bloc parties, are reported to have commenced procedures under Article 67 (B) of the Indian Constitution, which outlines the process for removing the Vice President from their office.
The parties have reportedly garnered 70 signatures from the following parties.
The MPs allege VP Dhankhar of adopting a different approach in the house, favouring the ruling members and providing them immunity from the interruptions and disallowing adequate debate time, something they allege they are subjected to frequently.
A striking point put forward by the opposition bloc was the frequent disruptions in the speeches given by Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of the opposition (LoP) in the house.
The parliamentarians in revolt also allege that the VP made personal remarks during discussions on the floor, which they claim violated parliamentary rule 238 (2).
The upper house experienced a furore among the members on Monday after the BJP launched a scathing attack against Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, linking her with billionaire investor George Soros, colluding to disrupt the internal safety and stability of India.
