Opposition moves no-confidence notice against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla
The opposition parties in Parliament have submitted a no-confidence notice to remove Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla from his post. The notice has been signed by 118 members of Parliament, including the Congress, Left parties, RJD and others.
The opposition has accused the speaker of being biased during house proceedings. They say that the speaker supports the ruling government and does not allow the opposition to speak freely in the Lok Sabha. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi said that the speaker is working under government pressure, which is against democratic values.
According to Parliamentary rules, at least 50 MPs are needed to submit such a proposal, so the notice is valid. The discussion on the proposal can take place after 14 days. During this time, the speaker will not be allowed to preside over the house.
However, it will be very difficult for the opposition to pass this proposal. The ruling NDA has a clear majority in the Lok Sabha, which is needed to remove the speaker from office.
Even though the proposal is unlikely to succeed, it has created strong political debate and tension in Parliament.
