Only voter ID and passport proof of citizenship, not Aadhar or PAN, says Delhi Police

The Delhi Police have clarified that Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, and ration cards will no longer be accepted as valid proof of Indian citizenship. According to a senior Delhi Police official, only the Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) and Indian passport will now be considered legitimate documents for establishing citizenship status.

This decision comes in response to directives from the Central government and is being implemented as part of an ongoing verification campaign that began in October last year.

Authorities observed that a significant number of foreign nationals – particularly from Bangladesh and the Rohingya community – were falsely claiming Indian citizenship by using documents such as Aadhaar, PAN, and ration cards.

The official emphasized that while these documents are valid for accessing various government services and financial systems, they do not serve as definitive proof of nationality.
