ex-US president Barack Obama raises concerns over India not protecting minorities

The protection of the minority in the country was on the ex-US president's thoughts in an interview, while talking about PM Modi.

Obama expressed that if he were to meet the Indian prime minister, he would have a conversation about PM Modi not protecting the rights of ethnic minorities in India. Obama further added that not protecting minorities may lead to a strong possibility of India pulling apart. "We’ve seen what happens when you start getting into those kinds of large internal conflicts," he added reportedly.

Obama was also vocal about how diplomatic conversations with India should have a place for raising concerns about Indian democracy.

Talking about PM Modi, Obama also acknowledged the work he did with Modi regarding climate change in 2016. Obama discussed subjects like climate change and clean energy with the Paris Agreement.

Currently, PM Modi is on his first state visit to the US from June 21 to 24, where he was hosted by the current US President Joe Biden and the first lady, Dr Jill Biden for a dinner at the White House on June 22. Later PM Modi also addressed the US Congress and appeared for a rare press conference. He is slated to address the Indian diaspora later in his tour on June 23.
