Nitish Kumar may contest Rajya Sabha polls, possible exit from Bihar CM post sparks buzz

Speculation is rife in Bihar’s political circles following reports that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar may be fielded by his party, Janata Dal (United), in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. If the move materialises, it could pave the way for Nitish Kumar to step down as Bihar’s Chief Minister, triggering a major political churn in the state.

Political observers say that a Rajya Sabha entry for Nitish Kumar would mark a significant shift, given his long and influential tenure in state politics. Nitish Kumar has served as Bihar’s Chief Minister nine times, making him the leader with the highest number of terms in the state’s history.

Amid the buzz, discussions have also begun over who would take charge of the Chief Minister’s post if Nitish Kumar moves to the Upper House. There is speculation that a leader acceptable to the Bharatiya Janata Party could be chosen, potentially altering the power balance within the ruling alliance in Bihar.

Sources indicate that earlier, there was talk of fielding Nitish Kumar’s son Nishant Kumar for the Rajya Sabha seat. However, the focus has now reportedly shifted to Nitish Kumar himself, adding further intrigue to the unfolding political scenario.

Adding weight to the speculation, JD(U) working president Sanjay Jha has reportedly left for Delhi. Political circles are abuzz with claims that he is in touch with the BJP’s central leadership, fuelling talk of high-level consultations and possible strategic realignments.

While no official confirmation has been issued so far, the developments have intensified speculation about a potential leadership transition in Bihar, with far-reaching implications for the state’s political landscape in the days ahead.
