In a major boost to India-UK educational cooperation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced that nine leading universities from the United Kingdom are set to open their campuses in India, marking a new milestone in bilateral ties.

Speaking after his meeting with visiting UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Raj Bhavan, Mumbai, PM Modi said the development represents a ‘new dimension’ in the partnership between the two nations, particularly in the field of education and innovation.

“It is a matter of great happiness that nine universities from the UK are now going to open campuses in India,” the Prime Minister said. He added that the University of Southampton has already inaugurated its Gurugram campus, where the first batch of students has begun classes.

PM Modi described education as a cornerstone of India-UK collaboration, noting that the visiting British delegation included “the largest and most influential representation from the education sector so far.”

The Prime Minister also underlined the broader context of India-UK cooperation, highlighting areas such as defence, technology, maritime security, and trade. He said the partnership between the two “natural allies” continues to serve as a pillar of global stability and economic progress.

The announcement comes just months after India and the UK signed the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), aimed at deepening collaboration in multiple sectors, including higher education, research, and innovation.

PM Modi said the educational partnership between the two countries will be driven by talent, technology, and trust, and will offer Indian students greater access to global learning opportunities without the need to travel abroad.
