The National Highway Authority of India’s (NHAI) ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ rule has come into effect across the country from Apr 1. With this, customers will not be able to use multiple FASTags for one vehicle.

The purpose of this rule is to discourage the use of one FASTag for multiple vehicles or keeping multiple FASTags for one vehicle, as per an official.

The public sector unit, NHAI, had extended the deadline for implementing the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ scheme to Mar 31, taking into account the problems faced by vehicle owners using Paytm FASTag.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had advised customers and merchants of Paytm’s associate subsidiary, Paytm Payments Bank Ltd (PPBL), to transfer their accounts to other banks by Mar 15.

FASTag covers about 98% of vehicles and has over 8 cr users.

It is noteworthy that FASTag is an electronic toll collection system in India and is operated by NHAI.

FASTag uses radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to deduct toll charges from a prepaid or savings account linked directly to the toll owner.
