Newly elected BJP MLAs to decide Delhi’s new CM today
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to convene its legislative party meeting on Wednesday to select the new chief minister of Delhi, following their victory in the Delhi Assembly elections. The meeting, initially scheduled for February 17, was postponed to today, with the swearing-in ceremony expected on Thursday at Ramlila Maidan.
The BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly, ending the decade-long tenure of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which won only 22 seats. Notably, prominent AAP leaders, including former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, were defeated in their constituencies.
Several names have emerged as potential candidates for the chief minister’s position. Parvesh Verma, who unseated Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency, is considered a strong contender. Other names in the fray include former Delhi BJP president Vijender Gupta, Rekha Gupta, and Satish Upadhyay.
The legislative party meeting will involve all newly elected BJP MLAs, who will select their leader in the presence of the party’s central observers. The chosen leader will then be sworn in as the next chief minister of Delhi.
As the BJP prepares to form the new government in Delhi after a 27-year hiatus, the decision on the chief ministerial candidate is eagerly awaited.
