New Driving License Grading System to Penalise Traffic Violators in India

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has announced that the central government is planning to introduce a new negative point grading system for driving licenses across India.

Under the proposed framework, a driver's license will function as a digital scorecard. Deductions will occur for every traffic violation, including overspeeding, jumping signals, or driving on the wrong side of the road.

If a motorist accumulates negative points beyond a prescribed threshold due to repeated rule-breaking, their license will face temporary suspension. Habitual offenders risk permanent revocation of their driving privileges.

According to Gadkari, the primary goal of the initiative is to curb road accidents and protect innocent lives by separating responsible drivers from persistent violators.

"Negative points will be awarded for each violation and once a certain number of points are accumulated, the license will be suspended or permanently revoked," Gadkari said. "Our aim is to save innocent lives by reducing road accidents."

Financial Rewards and Harsher Penalties

Beyond license suspensions, the new system aims to penalize careless drivers while offering incentives to those who maintain a clean record.

Drivers who consistently follow traffic rules and maintain a clean driving history may qualify for discounts on their vehicle insurance premiums. Conversely, motorists who repeatedly violate traffic regulations will face progressively harsher financial fines and severe legal action.

Public Reception Concerns

While the central government views the grading framework as a critical step toward road safety, questions remain over how the public will receive the measures. Many motorists across the country continue to struggle with poor road infrastructure, including widespread potholes and mud, leading to debate over introducing stricter driver penalties amidst existing road quality issues.
