The National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) has slammed the Karnataka government regarding the categorisation of the entire Muslim community as a backward caste for reservation purposes in the state and sought a clarification.
NCBC chairperson Hansraj Ahir reportedly stated that in Karnataka, there is a 32% reservation for OBCs and a separate one for SC-ST. Under this, they have been categorised as I, I(B), II(B), III(B), etc.
Under category I, there are 95 castes, of which 17 are Muslims, Ahir said. Similarly, he stated that out of 103 castes in category II(B), 19 belong to Muslims.
He added that they have found irregularities in the distribution of seats and will call the chief secretary again “to find out the reason behind the fraud”.
As per the Karnataka government, all Muslims in Karnataka are included in the OBC state list for jobs and educational institutions, Ahir added.
In a press release, NCBC disclosed that Karnataka govt informed them, “Muslim and Christian communities are neither caste nor religion. The Muslim population in Karnataka is 12.92%, who are considered religious minorities.”
According to the 2011 census, the Muslim population in Karnataka was 12.32%.
Which Muslim castes are included in category I in OBC?
The 17 Muslim communities included in Category I for OBC status are Nadaf, Pinjar, Darvesh, Chapparband, Kasai, Phulmali (Muslim), Nalaband, Kasai, Athari, Shikkaligara, Salaband, Ladaf, Thikanagar, Bajigara, Johari, and Pinjari.
