“To save a girl is to save a generation,” said Gordon Hinckley, a sentiment that resonates deeply as India celebrates National Girl Child Day. The day was marked by a positive shift in societal attitudes toward girl children, reflected in the rising number of adoptions across the country.

In Gujarat, 110 children were adopted in 2023-24, out of which 52 were boys and 58 were girls. This marks a significant step forward for society, as more people are now embracing the idea of adopting girl children, leaving behind outdated notions of girls being a burden to the family.

Looking at the national adoption statistics, the trend remains similar. In 2023-24, 1,727 boys and 2,302 girls were adopted, making a total of 4,029 adoptions across India.

Discussing this topic, the superintendent of an orphanage, Ritesh Dave, shared, “Most parents these days prefer to adopt a girl child rather than a boy.”

He further added that even families who already have a girl of their own often choose to adopt another girl. They believe that girls provide lifelong emotional support, often more so than boys.
