A shocking incident reportedly took place inside a Delhi sessions court earlier this month, where a man convicted in a cheque bounce case allegedly threatened a woman judge and used abusive language against her in the court.

As per the court order dated April 2, the convict – a retired teacher – reacted aggressively after Judge Shivangi Mangla, Judicial Magistrate First Class (Negotiable Instruments Act) of Dwarka Court, pronounced him guilty under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, which deals with cheque dishonour.

According to the reports, the convict allegedly shouted at her in Hindi, making a life-threatening remark: “Tu hai kya cheez… tu bahar mil, dekhte hai kaise zinda ghar jaati hai” (What kind of thing you are... come outside of the court, let us see how you return home alive). He also reportedly held an object in his hand and attempted to throw it at her.

The order written by the judge further states that after hearing the judgment, the man “erupted in anger” and began verbally abusing the judge, including making derogatory comments about her mother.

Judge Mangla said the convict and his lawyer not only created a scene in court but also reportedly pressured her to reverse the verdict and resign from her position, allegedly warning that they would file false complaints against her if she did not comply.

The judge further has recommended that appropriate legal action be taken against the convict and also directed that a show cause notice be issued to the defence counsel, Atul Kumar, asking him to explain his conduct. She stated that his behavior could amount to criminal contempt, and the matter may be referred to the Delhi High Court.

On April 5, three days after the incident, Judge Mangla sentenced the convict to 22 months of imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹6.65 lakh in connection with the cheque bounce case, as per reports.

The judge has also suggested that the matter be brought before the National Commission for Women, considering the seriousness of the threats and verbal abuse directed at her.
