As India preps to celebrate its 75th Republic Day this year on Jan 26, the ministry of home affairs has issued a circular to the States and Union Territories (UTs) today, directing them to maintain the sanctity of the national flags used on the several national, cultural, and sporting events hosted on the auspicious day.

Circular issued for Republic Day

The home ministry advised in the circular that disposal of the flags should be done privately, maintaining their dignity.

The ministry said that the Indian national flag represents the hopes and aspirations of the people of India. It also directed the States and UTs to comply with the provisions of the Flag Code of India, 2002.

The Prevention of Insults to National Honor Act, 1971, should also be followed before the Republic Day ceremonies, stated the circular.

The ministry has also requested that the government departments carry out a public awareness programme in this regard and run advertisements in electronic and print media.

The ministry issued a circular in this regard to all chief secretaries and administrators of the State governments, UTs, and Central government.
