LS polls phase VII: 55 crorepati netas, 36 facing criminal charges, reports ADR

As Lok Sabha elections 2024 enter the seventh and last phase scheduled for June 1, a total of 904 candidates across 8 states and union territories will contest from 57 parliamentary constituencies.

Out of 144 candidates analysed, 36 (25%) candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves, revealed the Association of Democratic Reforms. 

According to the breakdown of candidates from various parties who have declared criminal cases in the elections by ADR, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has 39% of its candidates, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has 30%, Samajwadi Party (SP) has 30%, Sardar Patel Siddhant Party has 78%, and Congress (INC) has 50% of their candidates with criminal cases against them.

Lallan Singh Yadav of BSP, who is contesting from Ballia, has a maximum number of 22 criminal cases registered against him, followed by Varanasi contender against PM Modi, Ajay Rai, with 18 criminal cases against him.

Swami Prasad Maurya who is the candidate from Kushi Nagar on Rashtriya Shoshit Samaj Party has 9 criminal cases registered against him.

Out of the 144 candidates, 55 (38%) candidates have assets worth more than ₹1 crore. 

The top three candidates with the highest assets in the current phase of the election are Rajeev Rai (SP) contesting from UP’s Ghosi with₹49.41 crore, followed by Ravindra Shukla (BJP) with ₹43.32 crore, and Pankaj Chaudhary (BJP) with ₹41.90 crore.

The lowest assets were disclosed by Gorakhpur candidate Shriram Prasad of Al-Hind Party with ₹25,000, followed by Santosh Kumar in Chandauli (₹38,000) and Ramprit in Maharajganj (₹50,000).

In this phase, elections will occur in certain constituencies across Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Chandigarh. UP’s Varanasi will also witness an iconic battle between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ajay Rai of the Congress.

The nation awaits Lok Sabha 2024 election results on June 4.
