Lok Sabha polls 2024: Royal contenders in BJP’s list

Maharani Kriti Singh Debbarma and Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, are among the 72 candidates on the list

As the nation gears up for the general elections in 2024, the spotlight now turns to unveiling the regal figures stepping onto the political stage.

From the corridors of power, two royal figures from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are set to debut in the race of democracy this year.

Maharani Kriti Singh Debbarma from Tripura and Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, the titular head of the erstwhile Mysuru royal family are among the 72 candidates on the list.

Who is Maharani Kriti Singh Debbarma?

Hailing the hilly state of Tripura, Maharani Kriti Singh Debbarma, is the princess of the erstwhile Manikya dynasty and elder sister of the founder of Tipra Motha Party (TMP) and the head of the Tripura royal family, Pradyot Manikya Debbarma. 

While her parents were actively involved in politics with the Congress party, Debbarma will make her debut with the BJP in upcoming elections.

Her father, Kirit Bikram Debbarma, was a three-time MP, and her mother, Bibhu Kumari Devi, a two-time Congress MLA, had served as the revenue minister of Tripura.

Notably, Kirit Debbarma was also the last king of Tripura.

The upcoming elections will be her debut, however, her parents were involved in politics with the Congress party in the past.

Kriti Singh Debbarma Gujarat connection

Debbarma received her schooling from Loreto Convent in Shillong. 

For further education, she pursued diploma courses in environmental education and management appreciation programmes for voluntary agencies, as well as senior management and rural development courses in Gujarat.

From 1992 to 1994, she served as an animal welfare officer in Shillong. She married Yogeshwar Raj Singh, a descendant of the royal family of Kawardha in Chhattisgarh.

Who is Yaduveer Wadiyar?

Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, the scion of the Mysuru royal family, emerges as a political debut contender in the BJP’s second list. 

Aged 32, he followed in the footsteps of his great-uncle Shrikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, a four-time MP.

Crowned in 2015, Yaduveer now carries the legacy as the 27th ‘king’ of the Wadiyar dynasty.

Yaduveer was adopted by Pramoda Devi Wadiyar, after the demise of her husband, Srikantadatta.

Yaduveer is an alumnus of the University of Massachusetts in the US where he pursued his bachelor of arts in economics and English.

MP Scidia, the royal son-in-law of Baroda’s Gaekwads

Civil aviation and steel minister Jyotindra Scindia is set to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from his family stronghold- Guna in Madhya Pradesh.

Scindia is the grandson of Jiwajirao Scindia, the last Maharaja of the princely state of Gwalior. He was married to Priyadarshini Raje Gaekwad, daughter of Sangramsinh Gaekwad of Baroda.

Scindia joined BJP in 2020.
