Lok Sabha 2019 Exit Polls

The Lok Sabha elections of 2019 saw a strong tilt towards the BJP right from the beginning, with a competitive atmosphere prevailing throughout. Most exit polls indicated that the BJP and its NDA allies would secure more than 300 seats, ensuring a decisive victory. Conversely, the Congress-led UPA alliance was projected to secure around 100 seats. After the results of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections were announced, apart from a few exceptions, the majority of the major exit polls proved to be accurate.

All these questions will soon be answered by the honchos of predictions.

What is an Exit Poll?

An exit poll in an election refers to a survey conducted with voters right after they’ve left the polling stations.

The Election Commission (ECI) has prohibited news channels from releasing exit poll results until 6 pm on June 1, the last day of voting.

Under Section 126A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, it is prohibited to conduct Exit Polls and dissemination of their results using print or electronic media during the period mentioned therein, i.e. between the hour fixed for the commencement of poll in the first phase and half an hour after the time fixed for the close of poll for the last phase in all the States.

Exit polls involve inferences of voters who they cast their ballots for after leaving the polling station, while in the latter exercise, individuals are queried about their intended voting choice.
