In a shocker, Nishant Agarwal, a former engineer at BrahMos Aerospace, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Nagpur court today for his involvement with Pakistan’s intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

In 2018, Agarwal leaked information about the BrahMos missile to ISI, leading to his arrest near Nagpur by Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra ATS and Military Intelligence.

The ex-BrahMos engineer was involved in missile projects, particularly in BrahMos facility, a joint venture between India and Russia developing the supersonic cruise missile BrahMos.

Due to his expertise and technical skills, he worked on many crucial projects in BrahMos Aerospace.

Who is Nishant Agarwal?

A mechanical engineering graduate, Nishant went to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar.

He started working as an engineer at BrahMos Aerospace shortly after graduation. His proficiency quickly earned him important positions and he became a key member of the teams working on missile projects.

He was convicted under section 235 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) for an offence punishable under section 66(f) of the IT Act and other sections of Official Secrets Act (OSA).

After his arrest, Agarwal had been remanded in judicial custody. Investigating agencies reportedly found evidence of his involvement in sensitive data transfer through computers and other digital devices.
