'Ladli Behna Scheme Has Become Very Costly,' Says MP CM Mohan Yadav at Bhopal Event on Schemes for Daughters

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said the Ladli Behna scheme had become a costly commitment for the state while answering a content creator’s question in Bhopal.

Yadav Calls Scheme an ‘Inside Story’

Yadav made the remarks during a programme at Rabindra Bhavan in Bhopal. A content creator from Chhatarpur asked what new schemes the government was planning for daughters.

Responding with a smile, Yadav said he had not realised the financial burden of the scheme when he became chief minister.

He also joked with the content creator that he was not eligible for the scheme yet and would have to grow older to benefit from it.

Congress Targets BJP Government

Yadav’s remarks drew a sharp response from the Congress. Former minister and Congress leader Umang Singhar accused the BJP of changing its attitude towards women after coming to power.

Singhar said women are called ‘ladli’ before elections but become a burden once the government is in power.

Scheme Costs Over ₹22,680 Crore Annually

The Madhya Pradesh government currently provides ₹1,500 per month to eligible women under the Ladli Behna Yojana.

The scheme places an annual financial burden of more than ₹22,680 crore on the state exchequer.

The scheme was launched by then chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on January 28, 2023, with monthly assistance of ₹1,000. The amount was later increased to ₹1,250 and then to ₹1,500.
