An uncanny silence has gripped Kashmir after the violent terror attack that claimed 28 innocent lives in Pahalgam on Tuesday. In a sight not seen in Kashmir in the past 35 years, the valley on Wednesday witnessed an unprecedented shutdown – a complete ‘bandh’.

From Srinagar to Anantnag, Shopian to Baramulla, the valley saw the first-of-its-kind shutdown in over 35 years. Protest rallies, candlelight vigils, and silent marches unfolded on Tuesday night and throughout Wednesday.

“A complete shutdown was observed in Gurez Valley Kashmir today as residents protested the recent killings of civilians in Pahalgam,” wrote a Kashmiri social activist on X.

Most of the shops, fuel stations and other business establishments were shut in Srinagar, as per local media reports. Only shops dealing in essential commodities were open across the city.

Public transport was also sparse, with private vehicles spotted here and there, as per reports.

According to social media reports, two minutes of silence at 3.30 pm on Wednesday was observed for the terror attack victims.

The brutal attack unfolded on Tuesday in the scenic Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, where terrorists reportedly emerged from dense forest areas and opened indiscriminate fire on a group of unsuspecting tourists belonging to Karnataka, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Haryana among other states.
