JNU professor dismissed over sexual harassment complaint by Japanese Embassy official

A senior faculty member of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Swaran Singh, has been dismissed following allegations of sexual harassment involving a Japanese embassy official, as per reports.

The incident reportedly occurred a few months ago during a university event hosted by JNU. It has been reported that this is not the first such allegation against the professor—several complaints had been received in the past.

JNU Vice Chancellor Shantishree Dhulipudi Pandit emphasized the university’s zero-tolerance policy towards sexual misconduct. She stated that the dismissal reflects the university’s firm stance on campus safety and accountability.

The decision to dismiss the professor was made by the university’s Executive Council after a detailed internal inquiry, according to reports.

The victim, an official at the Japanese embassy, was reported to be in regular touch with the professor for the coordination of conferences was allegedly molested by the professor during the event. After returning to Japan, she filed an official complaint. The matter was brought to the attention of the Indian embassy through diplomatic channels and was subsequently referred to the Ministry of External Affairs and the university administration.

The accused professor, who was reportedly a year away from retirement, was affiliated with the Centre for International Politics under the School of International Studies at JNU.
