Iran shuts airspace for Indian flights; Air India, IndiGo issue travel advisories

Iran has shut its airspace for Indian flights amid widespread protests and escalating tensions with the United States, prompting Indian carriers including Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet to issue travel advisories for passengers.
The airlines said several international services have been impacted following the closure of Iranian airspace, with flights being rerouted, delayed, or cancelled due to operational constraints.
In a post on X, Air India said that in view of the emerging situation in Iran, its flights overflying the region are being diverted via alternative routes, which may lead to delays. Some services have also been cancelled where rerouting is not feasible.
“Due to the emerging situation in Iran, the subsequent closure of its airspace, and in view of the safety of our passengers, Air India flights overflying the region are now using an alternative routing, which may lead to delays. Some Air India flights where currently rerouting is not possible are being cancelled,” the airline said.
Passengers have been advised to check flight status on the airline’s website before heading to the airport. Air India added that the safety of passengers and crew remains its top priority.
IndiGo also confirmed that some of its international flights have been affected by the sudden airspace closure. The airline said its teams are working to assess the situation and support impacted customers by offering alternative travel options.
“This development is beyond our control, and we regret the disruption it may have caused to your travel plans,” IndiGo said, adding that affected passengers can opt for flexible rebooking or refunds through its website.
SpiceJet issued a similar advisory, stating that some of its flights may be impacted due to the airspace shutdown. The airline urged passengers to check flight status online or contact its 24x7 reservation helpline for assistance.
The airspace closure comes amid large-scale protests in Iran against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and rising tensions with the United States, impacting international aviation routes across the region.
