On the 74th birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ajmer Sharif Dargah in Ajmer, Rajasthan is set to host a special ‘vegetarian’ feast. However, a rift took place between two sections of believers at Ajmer Sharif over the veg langar.
A section of ‘Khadims’ has objected the move, calling it political appeasement of the BJP, while another section, Chishty, defended it as a charitable act for the needy, without political motives.
Secretary Syed Sarwar Chishty reportedly noted that although feasts are traditional at the Dargah, this is the first time a politician’s birthday is being celebrated in this way.
On the other hand, Gaddi Nashin of Dargah Ajmer Sharif, Syed Afshan Chishty, said that as the feast is for the needy, there is no ‘political angle’ in this. and that he was not ‘directly refused’ to the feast at the time of organising, reported media.
The entire langar was organised by the Minorities Foundation and Chishty Foundation of Ajmer Sharif in conjunction with the BJP’s ‘Sewa Pakhwada’ 15-day initiative from Sep 17 to Oct 2.
“Acts like the vegetarian langar at Ajmer Sharif show how communities unite in celebration of inclusivity and mutual respect,” Minorities Foundation posted on Instagram.
According to the post, the langar will include rice, pure ghee, and dried fruits, and it will be distributed among ‘devotees’ and ‘underprivileged’.
The process will commence on the 17th with the lighting of the ‘deg’ (the big deg is 37 feet wide and over 4,000 kg sweet rice is being cooked in it) and continue with the distribution of food.
