Indore cleanest city in India once again, Surat follows second

As per the results of the 9th edition of the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25, the urban cleanliness survey of India, Indore has been once again declared the cleanest city in India.
This marks the city’s ninth consecutive year at the top of the list. Indore has been recognised the cleanest city of India from 2017 to 2025.
Closely following Indore is Surat, the only feature on the top 10 from Gujarat. The southern Gujarat city was ranked second in 2020 and 2021, whereas it shared the top spot with Indore in 2023 Swachh Survekshan.

- Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh
- Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh

- New Delhi, Delhi
- Ambikapur, Chhattisgarh
Notably, the list features three cities from Andhra Pradesh, two from Madhya Pradesh, and one each from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi, and Chhattisgarh.
Swachh Survekshan’s framework takes into consideration the following three factors:
Service level progress (weighted 40%): Evaluating how cities are advancing in areas like ODF (Open Defecation Free) status, waste segregation, solid waste processing and disposal, and sustainable sanitation. Claims are cross-verified through citizen interaction and ground-level checks.
Citizens’ voice (30%): Direct public feedback and their active participation in cleanliness efforts.
Certifications (30%): Gauging how cities are performing under Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs protocols, including Star Ratings for Garbage Free Cities and various ODF categories (ODF, ODF+, ODF++, Water+).
An external agency vets all data through calls, site visits, and random area checks. Assessor movements are geo-tagged for transparency and credibility.
