The new Immigration Bill has been approved in Parliament. This will lead to stricter action against those using fake passports or visas to enter, stay, or leave India.

Under the provisions of this bill, individuals involved in such fraud can face imprisonment of up to 7 years and a fine of up to ₹10 lakh. Additionally, the central government will now have greater control over the movement of foreign nationals, including the power to impose entry restrictions, prevent departures, and limit access to specific regions.

The Immigration and Foreigners Bill, drafted under the supervision of the Ministry of Home Affairs, mandates that hotels, universities, other educational institutions, hospitals, and nursing homes must provide information regarding foreign nationals. This measure will help monitor foreigners staying in such institutions beyond a specified duration. Similarly, all international airlines and ships arriving at any port or location in India will be required to submit a list of passengers and crew members.

The bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on March 11. According to its provisions, anyone using a fake passport, travel document, or visa to enter, reside in, or exit India will face a minimum sentence of 2 years, which may extend up to 7 years. Additionally, such individuals will be liable to pay a fine ranging from ₹1 lakh to ₹10 lakh.

Any foreign national entering any region of India without a valid passport or travel document required for that area will be subject to a penalty, which may include imprisonment of up to 5 years and a fine of up to ₹5 lakh, or both.
