A 26-year-old Indian student in the United States has reportedly died by suicide, leaving his family and friends in deep shock. The student, known as Chandu, completed his masters degree from DePaul University and was living in the U.S with hopes of building a better future, as per reports.
Like many international students, Chandu was allegedly facing pressure related to job search, visa deadlines, and financial responsibilities. After completing studies, students usually get limited time under OPT (Optional Practical Training) to find a job, which can create a lot of stress. Reports suggest that these challenges may have affected him deeply.
A fundraiser has now been started on GoFundMe to bring his body back to India. The campaign, titled “Bringing Chandu Home to His Family for Final Rites,” has reportedly raised over $57,000 out of a $70,000 target. It was organised by Rajesh Gurram from Missouri.
In the fundraiser message, Chandu is described as a caring son, a loving brother, and a helpful friend. According to reports, he had gone to Chicago with big dreams and was always there to support others, especially his younger sibling.
“It is with heavy hearts and profound grief that we share the news of his passing,” the message states, adding that “the weight of the challenges he faced became too much to bear.”
The funds are being collected to cover the cost of bringing his body back to India, which includes legal paperwork, flight charges, and funeral arrangements. His family is not financially strong and is also dealing with an education loan burden.
This incident has again raised concerns about mental health issues faced by international students. Many people are now saying that more support is needed, as students often hide their struggles while trying to succeed abroad.
