The Indian Railways is reportedly preparing to introduce strict baggage regulations for passengers, a move that will bring train travel closer to the practices followed in air travel.
According to a report by TOI, the proposed framework, luggage will have to be weighed at electronic weighing machines installed at major stations.
The permissible baggage limits will vary according to class: AC First Class passengers will be allowed up to 70 kg, AC Two Tier up to 50 kg, AC Three Tier and Sleeper Class up to 40 kg, while General Class travellers will be restricted to 35 kg, noted the report.
The first phase of implementation will cover key stations in the NCR zone, including Prayagraj Junction, Prayagraj Chheoki, Subedarganj, Kanpur Central, Mirzapur, Tundla, Aligarh Junction, Govindpuri and Etawah. Passengers will be allowed access to platforms only after their baggage is cleared within prescribed limits, officials said.
From December 2026, access to terminal areas will be restricted to passengers with valid train tickets — which will function as “boarding passes” — while visitors will require platform tickets that will serve as “visitor passes.”
