An Indian mountaineer has become one of the first climbers to lose his life on Mount Everest during the current spring climbing season, which typically spans from March to May. A climber from the Philippines also died around the same time, according to reports .
The Indian climber, identified as Subrata Ghosh, 45, reportedly died on Thursday while descending from the summit. He had successfully reached the 8,849-metre (29,032-foot) peak but is said to have refused to make his way back down from an area just below the Hillary Step, a treacherous section near the top of the mountain.
As per the reports, the Nepal-based company managing the climb, is making recovery efforts to bring Ghosh’s body down to base camp.
The exact cause of Ghosh’s death will be confirmed following a post-mortem examination.
The Hillary Step, located in Everest’s notorious “death zone” – the stretch above 8,000 metres where oxygen levels are critically low – is one of the most dangerous parts of the climb. Prolonged exposure to such extreme conditions often proves fatal.
