Indian Boxer Berwal’s ‘Narendra’ Remark From Pakistan Opponent Leaves PM Modi Laughing

Indian boxer Narender Berwal left Prime Minister Narendra Modi laughing during a felicitation event in New Delhi after recounting a humorous exchange with a Pakistani opponent following their bout at the 2015 World Military Games.

Berwal, who recently won a silver medal in the men’s 90+kg category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, shared the anecdote while interacting with Modi at the Prime Minister’s residence on Sunday.

‘You cannot lose to a Pakistani boxer’

Recalling the contest, Berwal said his first-round opponent was from Pakistan and that his army colleagues had made it clear he had to win the bout.

He said both fighters suffered cuts during the match and later went to hospital for stitches.

The remark that had everyone laughing

Berwal revealed that his army coach at the tournament was also named Narender. His Pakistani opponent then pointed out the unusual coincidence involving the boxer, his coach and India’s Prime Minister.

According to Berwal, the opponent told him: “Your name is Narender, your coach’s name is Narender, and your Prime Minister’s name is Narendra. I’ve started hating the name Narendra.”

The remark prompted loud laughter from Modi and others present at the event.

Berwal’s silver adds to India’s record boxing campaign

Berwal’s silver medal contributed to India’s best-ever boxing performance at the Commonwealth Games, with the Indian contingent returning from Glasgow with 10 medals — seven gold and three silver.

India finished fourth overall in the medal standings with 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze. The Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton were handed over to India, which will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad.
