India seeks better ties, stricter action against pro-Khalistanis under new Canada PM Carney

With Mark Carney set to take over as the new Prime Minister of Canada, India is hopeful that his leadership will lead to stricter action against Khalistani extremism and a reset in diplomatic relations between the two nations, which hit a low point during Justin Trudeau's tenure.
Tensions between India and Canada escalated in September 2023 after Trudeau alleged that Indian operatives were involved in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. The claim, which India strongly rejected, further strained bilateral ties. In the aftermath, India called on Canada to crack down on pro-Khalistani activities and prevent its soil from being used for anti-India operations.
Carney, who secured a landslide victory in the Liberal Party leadership race with 85.9% of the vote, has expressed his willingness to rebuild ties with India. He also emphasised the importance of strengthening trade relations between Ottawa and New Delhi, indicating a potential diplomatic shift.
India views Carney’s leadership as a possible opportunity for Canada to adopt a firmer stance against Khalistani extremism, which has long been a concern for New Delhi. In the past, India has repeatedly raised objections over Khalistani elements organising protests, fundraising, and holding anti-India rallies on Canadian soil. New Delhi has sought assurance that Canada will take appropriate measures to curb activities that could jeopardise India’s sovereignty and internal security.
