India, China commence troop withdrawal along LAC
Updated: Oct 26th, 2024
After four years of tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, India and China are gradually moving towards normalcy.
Recently, during a BRICS summit in Kazan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held bilateral talks. As part of an agreement reached prior to the summit, both nations have begun withdrawing soldiers from the Depsang and Demchok areas in Ladakh and have approved the resumption of patrols.
On Friday, the disengagement process started in these regions, expected to continue until October 29. Temporary infrastructure, such as 10 to 12 structures, was removed in Demchok, while China withdrew military vehicles and India reduced its troop presence.
Local commanders from both countries are overseeing the disengagement process in Depsang and Demchok. Each side has already dismantled their temporary tents in Demchok.
A joint verification process will also be conducted through ground and aerial surveys to ensure compliance.
