The Supreme Court expressed concern on Feb 27 about retired district judges of the country getting ₹19,000-20,000 per month as pension.

The apex court was concerned that these judges could not manage their livelihood on such a small amount of pension. The court also sought the assistance of the attorney general in the matter and expressed the need for the Centre to get involved in it and provide a resolution.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud said that retired judges are getting a monthly pension of ₹19,000-₹20,000after such a long service.

“How will they manage their livelihood for the rest of their lives? This is the age when judges cannot even start practising in the High Court after retirement,” said CJI.

He expressed that the judges are the victims here and the matter needs to be resolved. It is not appropriate for district judges to get such a low pension even after 20 to 30 years of service.

One can only imagine how they live on such a small pension, said the CJI. The Supreme Court is hearing the petition of the All India Judges Association.

In response, attorney general R Venkataramani stated that the issue would be taken into consideration.

The CJI also said that some high court judges have petitioned the Supreme Court for non-payment of salaries. Because they have not been allotted new GPF (General Provident Fund) accounts after getting promotion from district courts.

Currently, the Supreme Court is hearing the petition of the All India Judges Association, and it has accepted the recommendations of the second National Judicial Pay Commission and issued an order regarding pay and service conditions.
