Immediate halt to sacrilegious activities on Parasnath Hill, demands Jain community
Updated: Jul 30th, 2024
Due to the increased number of tourists encouraged by the Jharkhand government, the Parasnath hill has seen an upsurge in New Year's celebrations, picnics, and eating activities, which are considered impure by Jains. An application seeking a Supreme Court order against these activities was filed by Darshana Shah.
The hearing for the application is scheduled on July 31.
Parasnath Hill, also known as Shikharji or Sammed Shikhar, is one of the most sacred sites for Jains. It is here that 20 out of the 24 Tirthankaras and Jain monks attained nirvana. The Jharkhand government is attempting to develop this site into a tourism destination with an expenditure of ₹2,000 crore.
Additionally, there are proposals for a ropeway construction, and non-vegetarian food is being served on the hill, alleged the application.
“Just as Ayodhya holds significant importance for Hindus, Parasnath Hill holds equal reverence for Jains,” says Acharya Yugbhushan Suri ji, demanding action from the government.
The court is being asked to urgently order the Jharkhand government to halt the activities that are violating this sacred site.
**Issues Raised in the Petition to the Supreme Court Against the Jharkhand Government:**
The ropeway construction: Traditionally, Jains consider walking barefoot on a pilgrimage to be a sign of devotion, so there is opposition from the Jain community regarding the proposal to build a ropeway on the hill.
The construction of voting booths, commercial shops, schools, etc., on the hill, which is affecting the sanctity of the site.
Schools on the hill serve non-vegetarian food to students, which is entirely unacceptable to the Jain community and raises concerns about the sanctity of the hill.
